Rook is a relatively new brand in the UK but one that has taken off pretty nicely and for simple reasons, great graphics on a street wear staple. Brixton bring us the Brixton Oath 3 snapback, which in a market place now flooded with snapbacks finding a well made sophisticated hat can be very difficult. These are, as expected made to a high standard as Brixton are primarily a headwear specialist brand and they display a sophisticated colour palate and combination which is perfect for the slightly mature and/or slick streetwear enthusiast. This Spring summer the pocket t-shirt is the street wear staple or staple as most design houses drop their latest stock with version of their own. The big guns like Carhart, Edwin and even high end Maision Martin Margiela have carried this on into the new year looking strong as usual. So fat we have been mostly impressed by the collaboration between U.S up and coming brand The Quiet Life and UK street wear retail giant Flat Spot to come up with the two way colour variation in the collection. The two T-shirts in black and white feature the pocket variation and detailing with a vintage graphic patchwork. As you can imagine these sold out fast.

Other Pocket T-shirts we dig are from Ontour, the Dutch label continues to progress and churn out top quality designs. TukTuk who have moved from their shirting expertise to bring us some cool pocket t-shirts too.

THE AMPAL CREATIVE

The Ampal Creative was formed as founders Andrew Potash and Daniel Schechter felt the headweat market seemed limited and stale. In 2007 they launched their first collection and this has gone from strength to strength. Between the inception of The Ampal Creative and now, quality, attention to detail and amazing craftsmanship has been synonymous with the company. Manufactured in the USA using premium textiles and very unique prints, The Ampal Creative is proving individual unique headwear on a scene that is saturated by similar mundane designs.

The amazing choice of prints is what gets us excited about what these guys are doing. The designs and the look of the headwear really does give and reflect the Californian vibe and lifestyle, (where the brand is based.) And like many other brands from this part of the world The Ampal Creative is bound to have big things happen her in Europe.

MACHINEDRUM – Berlin [Luckyme, Planet Mu]
One half of Sepalcure, Machinedrum, will be coming back after tearing the roof off Wire at the last Modulate last March. Originally from New York and now residing in Berlin, Machinedrum’s past year has been monumental – releasing a string of EP’s and most notably dropping his incredible album ‘Rooms’ on Planet Mu. Its a pleasure to bring him back to Leeds.

SINJIN HAWKE – Barcelona [Pelican Fly]
Canadian born Sinjin Hawke joins Modulate for his first UK show. His debut EP ‘The Lights’ fuses his own brand of RNB spliced dance music that is unmistakable, setting 2012 to be Sinjin’s breakout year. Make sure you catch this special one-off appearance.

ELIPHINO – London [Brownswood, Somethinksounds]
Fellow ex-Leeds resident, Eliphino, has been making some big waves in recent months, from releasing on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood compilation, to releasing 2 EP’s courtesy of Somethingsounds. It didn’t take long for his ‘More Than Me’ EP to sell out, you’ll be hard pushed to find a DJ who doesn’t have this one in his bag.

BEHLING & SIMPSON – Bristol [Future Boogie, Apple Pips]
Bristol-based duo Behling & Simpson are quickly becoming two of the most talked about newcomers in house music, having already remixed the likes of Juilo Bashmore and Crazy P, signing to Appleblim’s Apple Pips label, and dropping one of the smoothest slow house jams of the year with their re-edit of Faith Evans.

Electro Kid is a newly launched brand from the UK built upon the skating x hiphop culture.
Sustaining a strong foundation in originality & creativity and aiming to achieve glory. The brand has been in the works for 3 years and has finally taken off.
Their Winter Collection consists of two colourway beanies and a limited collection t-shirt. The limited edition beanies were produced and manufactured in the UK by hand, paying close attention to the design and detail.

Driven by their motto “In Hoc Signo Vinces” which translates to “By this sign thou shalt conquer” We predict great things for Electro Kid.
The brand is currently operating on a seasonal collection launch so make sure to be first in line for their Spring Collection.
This is just the beginning hence the work is still in its early stages.

We heard about the first copy of the magazine coming out and we had our reservations as most do about the quality of a free magazine. We have seen many pop up with promises of great quality material and most just fail to deliver. When the copy hit us at Steadyguy it was one of those moments when any publication or creative project massively exceeds your expectation. Not implying that the JAM crew did not know what they were capable of, just that we didn’t know these guys are capable. Well put together as a magazine with a layout that’s excellent to just glide through the articles and the imagery. Best front cover we have seen this year and that follows through into the rest of the magazine.

Ok we don’t write reviews or commentary’s as we aren’t blessed with sublime writing and commentary capabilities, (unless we’re talking sneakers) to write well enough to steer your opinion on the magazine. Brand8 has teamed up with Helena Christensen and Dyhr Hagen to develop some limited edition t-shirts that will see proceeds also helping out The Danish Aids Foundation.

This is a combination that warms our hearts here at SteadyGuy, An independent label, quality product, great designers involved a VERY good cause all in one melting pot just to put a smile on our faces or yeah and Helena Christensen ;)

This year the most exciting pieces that we have seen coming from the top Street wear brands as they release their Autumn Winter “11 collections is from the guys from Ontour. We have always been long standing fans and we continue to grow as a retailer but these guys are growing even faster. Not in terms of business which I’m sure they are as well judging from their expansion into their own web store, but in terms of their design capabilities and quality garments.

Testament to that is the newly developed Ontour Shelter Jacket which comes in a top quality waxed cotton in a different colour scheme to the ones from previous seasons, in black and olive. This jacket is sturdy and durable so much that when I tried one of these on the comfort which was coupled by a convincing feeling that it would resist the harshest of weather, made me weirdly crave for really sh*t while wearing it.

The pocket watch/clock has always been an object made of precious metals, handcrafted, enamelled and/or decorated. Full Spot makes it “affordable”, transforming the materials while maintaining the spirit of the company, the shell is made of plastic with soft touch effect, and the metal chain, a special hook allows you to fix the clock to trousers, or jacket or as a general fashion accessory

The Hundreds is attributed as the brand thats brought back the snapback to mainstream street fashion and boy have they done it well. They continue to put out some crazy designers and colourways. Collect the full Tatanka series. These are bound to be collectors items in a few years and worth a few quid.

We are also expecting the Photography T-shirts to drop with The Hundreds Meg White/Black T-shirts and the Castor White/Black T-shirt due to drop as well. watch this space

season after season but with the talents of Cottee brothers leading the brand and with the mere fact they are Australians creates a fusion of great design talent and natural instinct with their garments. For us from this side of the pond world you can see the freshness of these guys work from the brands that dominate Europe, these guys are a brand waiting to explode in these parts of the world.

We have been eagerly awaiting our delivery for the summer which we literally can’t wait for.

The Summer Nautical stripe themes are prevalent but with interesting an eye catching colour coordination which exemplifies the type of colour schemes the palate of the design house at Vanguard. The seamingless versatility of the garments between male and female is also astonishing, so girls you are more than catered for.

Here is a taster on what to expect

Brixton released a promo video in support of their Summer 2011 collection. The video follows on nicely from the Spring film. The brand is growing at an incredible pace and is venturing more and more into apparel and also a strong women’s collection. Brixton Hats as many would like to know it as is more like Brixton the fashion brand. With elegant simple designs that value quality over fuss, be sure to look out for many thing coming from Brixton. Expect the classics such as the HEIST, CABBY, GAIN, but look out for other exciting stuff coming up like the Kiln Rugger and the Brixton apparel range coming up.

HOWEVER due to public demand. We have spread our wings into womens wear, and it was a natural progression for us to take on NUMPH, the unofficial Humor sister brand. We feel that the streetwear and urban fashion angle that we try and deliver is very difficult to capture what ladies want but we feel the desings and patterns of what NUMPH offers is perfect for the ladies that appreciate quality streetwear that comes with elegance. Its not the streetwear that has women dressed in bright coloured hoodies, tracksuits etc, that some ladies may think makes them more masculine that hip.

In the Numph high summer collection we are highly anticipating the, IZA SHIRT, AMALIE KNIT CARDIGAN, JASMIN KNIT DRESS, LOLLEAH DRESS, TAMIE PANTS, TANYA DRESS among other pieces which are pretty strong in the collection.

No wonder the likes of ASOS, HOUSE OF FRASER, and many other retailers are now stocking Numph. As Numph caters for all women with dresses, tops trousers knits etc that caters for both for the mainstream commercial fashion that a TOPSHOP kinda girl, and a HOUSE OF FRASER woman.  But the beauty of their collection is it also caters for a more hip and more daring (STEADYGUY)  kinda girl with street cred SWAG.

Sometimes a reflection is blurred.
This just means you have to look harder.

When we had a pop up store in Leeds all age groups were loving what Ontour do and this season has not been a let down, getting rave reviews from HYPEBEAST and all the streetwear blogs and media because of their triumphs in the totally individual spring summer look. The SHELTER PARKA 2.0 being an excellent development on last season SHELTER 1.0. The shirting department for us here has been a cut above the rest of the Streetwear Shirting releases, The ONTOUR SHADOW SHIRT, THE MCFLY SHIRT, And the CARGO SHIRT among others have all been truimphs. The success in the shirting area is backed up by the T-shirt range which features among many great designs THE GRAVITY t-shirt, The ONTOURISM, THE SHADOW and the BEAM ME UP t-shirt which have sent ripples in the streetwear game. With the refreshing perspective of a Dutch brand in the Streetwear game that is dominated by American brands has meant these guys have given us a trully solid collection, which also manages to capture the attention of those outside the street fashion scene.

When you hear of eco friendly and or sustainable products there is are instant alarm bells as to the aesthetic standard of a product. Ok maybe not so much now as before when it was a time when eco friendly and/or sustainable meant the whole hippy vibe and more focus on these elements and utilitarianism to the detriment of aesthetics and style. Yeah of course sustainable product design has come a long way now in terms of packaging and with gadgets, but I feel in fashion there is still a long way to go, (apart from the resurgence of Vintage Fashion has done its bit in encouraging the recycling of fashion). Many new ideas have struggled to move from the “hippy” vibe and designers have struggled to break away from that to create eco friendly/sustainable fashion products which cut the mustard in terms of fulfilling the requirements of contemporary up to date designs.

Being a firm believer in the saying that “one of the hardest things to achieve in truly good design in simplicity”, BAGGU BAGS have really come up with a range of simple cost effective, contemporary range of re usable eco friendly stylish bags. With BAGGU, ladies in LA are now feeling stylish coming from the grocery store with a BAGGU bag that they can reuse day in day out. They Have made a range of bags that include the STANDARD BAGGU, BIG BAGGU, DUCK BAG and a BEACH BAG all made out of recylcled cotton. The design ethos of their bags and their colour palate reminds me of the days when the Scandinavian brand WOOD WOOD came on the scene, good clean simple effective design  but what’s awesome about BAGGU is that it helps us do our bit for the planet. In my opinion, if you are going to invest in a pair of smart casual shoes for work and play, make sure it is leather. Because,  leather improves after a few wears (and tears),  when the skin cracks slightly and starts to mature beautifully – you just can’t get that effect anywhere else.

The guys RYAN and CHRIS who are behind this new up and coming t-shirt brand from a split between the LEEDS and MANCHESTER street fashion scene had had enough of the mass produced “TOPSHOP style s***” as they would describe it, and took the militant approach to come up with the awesome graphics that dominate their T-Shirt prints with an ethos that that we love which is how they have taken the more ethical approach of not succumbing to the pressures of the fashion scene where these days dollar bills dictate everything and have decided to put a price tag that is decent and just highlights what the brand is all about.

Thing is there is stuff out there at the price range these guys are offering. Fine. But check out the graphics and the prints these guys have in their line.

Wicked brand wicked philisophy and the best thing for us is we are poised to work with Peasoup Clothing. Watch this space. But in the meantime check their website support these guys and their stuff makes good christmas gifts for those cool kids you are struggling to find a gift for.

The 24th Leeds International Film Festival is back to grace this lovely city with more amazing films to fill nearly 3 weeks full of films. It’s one of those events that makes Leeds special and the highlight of us folks here. There’s  hundreds of films on show – shorts, to feature lengths – very impressive spread. I’m kinda liking the  Official Selection too.

Influenced by a constant look to future and past, tradition and modernity they create fresh designs for confident cool people of all ages, who care about their style.

As you know at Steadyguy we love discovering hidden gems in design that are not yet all over the planet and the latest thing to grip my attention. Dolfie Shoes managed to excite in the same way as Itailian brands like, GOURMET, VOLTA, to other brands like POINTER. Although the design philospohy from DOLFIE is not as dominated by achieving more through simplicity as the brands mentioned earlier, but their collections possess some funky slightly eccentric but exciting funky pieces.

These guys are worth keeping an eye out for.
